Woman killed on road near Blenheim
A woman was killed after she was struck by a car near Blenheim early last night.
The car was travelling towards Blenheim when it struck the woman on State Highway 1 at Riverlands Industrial Estate about 5.45pm.
Police would not say if the woman was walking on the side of the road when she was hit.
They were keen to talk to anyone who had seen a female pedestrian dressed in dark clothing walking near SH1 around the time of the crash.
It was dark and dry when the accident happened.
Marlborough highway patrol team leader Sergeant Barrie Greenall said the female driver of the utility vehicle was from Blenheim and travelling alone.
She was being looked after by victim support, Mr Greenall said.
"She is understandably distressed by the events."
The ute was not all that badly damaged, he said.
The police did not give any indication of the cause of the accident.
At least three police cars and up to 10 police attended the crash.
A serious crash investigator from Nelson was expected to arrive later.
Police initially closed the highway but reopened one lane within an hour to ease a backlog of traffic.
Drivers were asked to take extreme care.
Anyone with information should contact Blenheim police on 03 578 5279.
