Formal 2.0 a winner
It was a case of second time perfect for the Marlborough Girls' College and Boys' College students who walked the red carpet at this year's combined colleges formal on Saturday night.
The event was due to take place on August 16 but was cancelled at the eleventh hour after the severe earthquake that shook Marlborough that afternoon. But there were no such disruptions on Saturday night as some 450 students, dressed to the nines, arrived at the Marlborough Convention Centre in Blenheim.
Girls' College deputy principal Jo Chamberlain said the night went off without a hitch. "It was a fantastic night - there was a great atmosphere and everyone just had a great time," she said.
Year 13 students Mary-Clare James and Lauren Collins, both 17, said the "Wonderland" themed formal was definitely one to remember. They both attended last year's formal and were more relaxed this year, knowing what to expect.
"We went with a group of friends rather than with dates and it was really fun. It's cool to go with just your friends - we had a great time," said Mary-Clare.
Ms Chamberlain commended the students' good behaviour and gave special thanks to the 14-strong student organising committee who put the evening together. As a result of the August earthquake they had set up and taken down all the decorations twice.
Girls' College head girl Georgie Crawford said the work had been draining but worth it. "Everything that could go wrong went wrong, but in the end it was a really successful formal."
