The Black Seeds Live Vol. 1
The Black Seeds, New Zealand's premier feel-good dub-reggae act, have released a bang-up new live release just in time for summer.
The album seems to have turned into a staple part of any successful New Zealand group's catalogue, and it doesn't get much better than this 12 live tracks recorded at venues around the globe from 2003 to the present with a DVD to boot.
Too often live albums sound hollow and fail to catch a group's energy, but the lads from Wellington seem to have found a perfect balance of the live vibe and quality production.
There's nothing new and unreleased on the album, but what is unique are those little moments when individual musicians step up to the plate and get a little loose.
That's the best part about the release it's more fun and creative.
From the epic guitar solo on You Get Me to the upfront trumpet jam on Senegal Champions of Africa there is more flamboyancy than any of the group's five previous studio albums.
Usually it is about now I find something to critique about a release, but there's nothing to take a dig at. It's just a great album.
To grab this album it's not just a case of whipping down to John's CD store because the CD/DVD combo is only available at their gigs or at theblackseeds.com
