A Picton motel has been named in the top 25 bargain hotels in the world.

Gateway Motel was voted No 8 in TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice Top 25 Bargain Hotels in the World for 2014.

Manager Kent Stevenson said he was scrolling through the world category to be nosey when he spotted Gateway Motel.

His instant reaction was "holy s...", he said. "We just laughed . . . I was really blown away. I thought ‘wow that's incredible'. It was a real laugh because we are not a real flash place but we are comfortable and we try really hard to give people that great experience here in Marlborough."

The motel was also named No 1 in the South Pacific and top in New Zealand for 2014.

Part of the reason they received these awards was that they put a lot of effort into helping people, he said. "I think that is the secret to our success really, just trying to give people the best time while they are here."

He and his wife, Marie, pride themselves on giving their guests the best service, and that was a team effort, he said. "It's never just one person, it's a whole team."

He didn't know how TripAdvisor judged the awards, despite asking them several times.

"It's actually a bit of a secret."

Gateway Motel had 482 excellent ratings and just one terrible rating on TripAdvisor.

"You can't please everybody."

Mr Stevenson said they were about to spend $250,000 improving the motel.

The motel has won TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice awards for the past three years.
