Spy Valley Wines picked their first fruit of the season yesterday, but it was an unusual start to the harvest, says chief winemaker Paul Bourgeois.

Generally, chardonnay or pinot noir grapes are the first to come in but yesterday it was a block of sauvignon blanc from their Waihopai Valley estate that made the grade.

Mr Bourgeois said it was the first time since 2008 that sauvignon blanc had been picked first.

The fruit was stored in a chiller, waiting to be crushed when the Express visited yesterday.

Mr Bourgeois said he could not stop eating the grapes right off the picked bunches.

The quality of the juice was "fantastic", he said.

"There was only one bunch per shoot [so] it's tasting really nice."

He said it was the earliest Spy Valley had ever picked - usually the first fruit was brought in for processing in March.

"It is the first time we have started in February.

"It's because the crops off this block were quite low."
