Among the scores of camera-wielding spectators with their lenses trained on vintage aircraft at the Classic Fighters Airshow at Omaka at the weekend, there was one who boasted a little more experience than most.

Kiwi movie-making legend Peter Jackson, a well-known wing nut, joined those enjoying the spectacular aerial and ground action.

Mr Jackson was smiling and relaxed as he shot still and moving images with his own camera, in between chatting to friends and other airshow patrons in the corporate area.

The private three-time Academy Award-winning film-maker, producer and screenwriter is a World War I collector and some of his memorabilia was among that on show.

He is also chairman of the Omaka Aviation Heritage Trust, which hosts the biennial show.

Mr Jackson is best known for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as his 2005 remake of King Kong.

He is now working on the movie version of Tintin and writing and executive producing The Hobbit. His latest completed film, The Lovely Bones, will be released in December.
