Gran-Dad's Army

Havelock Town Hall

Play written by Rick Edmonds

The Havelock Theatre Company's latest production Gran-Dad's Army opened to a full house on Thursday night.

Written by Sounds playwright Rick Edmonds, the show promised heaps of humour and didn't disappoint, with several scenes having the house roaring with laughter.

Set in present day Havelock, the plot follows the discovery by Department of Conservation rangers of seven Home Guard soldiers who had been posted on the Chetwode Islands in the outer Marlborough Sounds during World War II.

Forgotten for 68 years, the dedicated men have faithfully carried out their duties, scanning for enemy ships.

The hard-of-hearing medical and sanitation officer Corporal Clive, played by Ian Cameron, and artillery officer Gunner Neil, played by Gary Marshall, are hilarious and steal the funniest scenes. The rest of the cast offer laughs aplenty, too, as they try to integrate into modern society, while a decade-long secret is revealed rocking commanding officer Captain Lawrence, played by Steve Leslie, to his core.

The company find themselves on the wrong side of the law, due to their years consuming protected wildlife species.

If you are looking for a good laugh and an enjoyable night out then be sure to catch Gran-Dad's Army. Show times are 8pm on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Tickets are available from Eyes on Nature, 61 Main St, Havelock, Still Books at Tan's Place, 18 Scott St, Blenheim, and Take Note Picton, 28 High St.
