A troupe of Russian ballet dancers will glide onto the stage tonight to perform Don Quixote in Blenheim.

The Imperial Russian Ballet Company is touring New Zealand and Australia for three months performing the flamboyant ballet that tells the story of a retired gentleman who travels the roads of Spain searching for glory and grand adventure.

A team of 37 dancers and 10 crew members arrived in Blenheim on Monday ahead of tonight's performance at the Floor Pride Marlborough Civic Theatre in Blenheim.

It is principal female dancer Lina Seveliova's third tour of New Zealand. The 23-year-old was born in Moldova and trained for nine years at the National Choreography College in Chisinau. She joined the Imperial Russian Ballet Company in 2010.

Seveliova has been dancing since she was 10 and couldn't imagine her life without it, she said.

She trains between six and 10 hours a day apart from days off and tours with the company for 11 months of the year.

The Imperial Russian Ballet Company was formed in 1994 by the Bolshoi Theatre soloist Gediminas Taranda. The company has staged classic masterpieces in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and the Mossovet Theatre.

The Blenheim show will be the fifth of 21 shows in New Zealand, followed by a further 33 performances in Australia. The last time the Imperial Russian Ballet Company performed in Blenheim was in 2011 with "A Festival of Russian Ballet".

Tickets are still available for tonight's performance of Don Quixote at the Floor Pride Civic Theatre.
