There's no point shelling out huge sums on face creams and eye serums if your diet isn't up to scratch. Pop these 12 things on your plate and anti-age from the inside out.

BERRIES: They say blueberries are one of nature's super foods, but all berries have amazing anti-ageing properties. Super rich in antioxidants such as flavonols and anthocyanins, they promote cell health and fight the free radicals that cause wrinkles.

SKIN SUPPLEMENTS: Got a special event coming up? Thalgo's Collagen Booster is a 10-day course of a potent concentrate of marine collagen hydrolysate, hyaluronic acid, and vitamins C, E and selenium to target wrinkles, improve elasticity and boost radiance. It's also great to use prior to an anti-ageing salon treatment. It's $130.10 for a pack of 10 supplements (call 09 362 0882 for stockists).

DARK CHOCOLATE: Sorry guys, this isn't a free pass to eat all the chocolate you want, but studies do show that eating a small amount of dark chocolate a day can help protect the skin from the damaging effects of UV exposure. It also increases the skin's circulation and helps it to retain moisture in the skin.

FISH: Fish oil is high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which reduces inflammation and does a whole raft of good things for your heart. Fresh fish is good for you in for exactly the same reason. Fish is also a great source of healthy fat, which is good for your hair and skin. The best types to eat are salmon, tuna, sardines and yellow-eyed mullet.

OLIVE OIL: Not all fats are created equal. While animal fats should be consumed in moderation, you can go (slightly) crazy on the olive oil. With its monounsaturated fat it keeps your heart healthy, but it's also a wonderful hydrator for healthy skin.

CRANBERRY JUICE:  Drinking cranberry juice also halts plaque built-up so prevents your teeth yellowing and counteracts the bacteria that can cause tooth decay. Drink this for sparkly pearlers, but watch out for the sugar-drenched types.

CARROTS: They won't make you see in the dark, but the high levels of vitamin A in carrots will give you beautifully shiny hair and fabulous scalp health.

VITAMIN E: Give your body the best possible anti-ageing chance with a surge of vitamin E. A bottle of 75 Red Seal Vitamin E capsules is $12.50.

BRAZIL NUTS: The Brazil nut has ridiculous levels of selenium that helps along the production of an antioxidant called glutathione. This strange little mineral not only repairs cell damage, but can actually slow down the aging process. And the best bit is, you don't need to eat bucket loads of nuts to stay young, just two Brazil nuts a day will do the trick.

CUCMBER: You might be popping it on the eyes, but cucumber is great for the skin once it's inside your belly too; just don't peel them. There's silica in the peel that reduces wrinkles and boosts collagen.

TOMATOES:. Tomatoes have something called lycopene which (as well as helping prevent cancer and heart disease) acts as a natural sun block for the skin, preventing some of the UV damage that causes dry spots, age spots, wrinkles, and the all round look of old age.

SUNFLOWER SEEDS: Sunflower seeds contain another form of antioxidant - lignin phytoestrogens - which prevents collagen breakdown and boosts the skin's lipid barrier - the bit responsible for the barrier function of skin - protecting it from moisture loss.
