Today's page features the winner of our first monthly garden photo competition, plus a selection of other entries.
Splashing out on a new duty-free camera when returning to Marlborough from Brisbane proved to be a great move for amateur photographer Dyanne Wiffen.
The winner of our first monthly garden photography competition, Dyanne decided the garden was the perfect place to learn how to use her new camera. Her winning photograph is a close-up of bees gathering pollen from trees in blossom at Ward.
A variety of spring flower photographs were sent in, ranging from close-ups to garden overviews. Photos sent in may be collected from The Marlborough Express reception desk from noon on Tuesday.
Photo tips:
Keep the subject matter simple.
Avoid clutter in the background.
Make sure the photograph is in focus.
Add some action with birds, bees and butterflies etc.
Avoid shooting at noon, or any time the sun is bright.
Take your photographs on overcast days, or early in the morning, or late in the afternoon.
Avoid shadows or crop them out.
Use a tripod to shoot at slower speeds.
Buy a camera with manual setting over-rides and learn how to use them.
Show views framed by objects or structures within the garden.
For a general view of the garden, include a distinct foreground, middle ground and background.
