When Theresa and Gordon Berry moved into his family home in Havelock, they inherited a well-established garden, including a kauri tree planted half a century ago.

Since then they've developed and expanded the garden, but have been careful to nurture what was already planted.

A keen member of the Pelorus Garden Club, Theresa enjoys spending time pottering in her garden, but is quick to point out it is not an all-consuming hobby.

"Just ignore the weeds," she laughs.

Roses, dahlias and fuchsias thrive here, along with a sheltered bed of lush maidenhair ferns planted by her late mother-in-law, and a productive vegetable plot. The back retaining wall makes a perfect sunny spot for brambles to grow.

A talking point in the garden is the quirky sculpture Theresa created and named Gladys in the Garden in her Gumboots, to help her grandchildren with their enunciation.
