The Heaphy Track will reopen today to trampers and mountainbikers.
The storm on April 17 caused extensive tree windfall along the Kahurangi National Park track, forcing its closure and delaying the start of its winter mountainbiking season, which was due to start on Thursday.
The Department of Conservation had previously said it would not be open until at least May 12.
However, staff had prioritised the clean-up to allow it to be opened ahead of schedule, said DOC Westport Conservation Services Manager Bob Dickson.
However, parts of the track are still not yet up to their usual standard and bikers and walkers are advised to take extra care and watch out for loose vegetation in trees and some minor debris on the track.
This applied particularly in the sections between Brown and Perry Saddle huts and between MacKay and Lewis huts.
Is the region better served by having multiple events over one weekend or spread out throughout the year?Related story: (See story)
