Work has started on the upgrade of Marlborough Airport, and the first stages have been completed.
Marlborough Airport manager Dean Heiford said improvements to the airport's navigational equipment and its apron, the area in front of the terminal where planes park, had been completed.
Designs for the expanded terminal were being finalised, with tenders being analysed. Sign-off from key stakeholders, particularly Air New Zealand, was being sought.
As part of the expansion, the terminal is to be extended with the passenger check-in area being relocated and the baggage claim area put under cover.
The extension will more than double the floor space of the passenger area within the terminal.
The airport upgrade is expected to take six months to complete.
The work is to be done over the quieter winter months, Heiford said.
