Blenheim's Alex Williams is ready to put the 12-hour harvest shifts behind her and focus on her own beauty business.
The 21-year-old beauty therapist officially opened Alexandra Beauty Boutique yesterday at Hair By Kardos on Maxwell Rd.
Williams said she worked her "butt off" for Giesen Wines during this year's harvest to save up enough money to renovate her own space.
"I used all my savings . . . and I had help from mum and dad," she said.
The room she is working out of was once a "ratty and tatty" storage room but was turned into a room where she could offer a range of treatments including massages, manicures, spray tans and makeup.
Williams admits beauty therapy was not her first choice.
"I finished school in 2010 and I was planning to be a teacher so I went to Camp America [an American summer camp for children] and assisted with the kids and I was like, maybe not."
Camp America did help her decide what she really wanted to do though, Williams said.
"I met a lady and she inspired me to want to become a beauty therapist . . . so I went to MAC [cosmetics store] in New York and asked them how to become one."
She came back to New Zealand and attended the National School of Aesthetics in Christchurch.
She returned to Blenheim and worked in Trendez for a year before doing makeup for weddings with Hair By Kardos manager Debbie Jensen. Before long, she was offered space in the salon.
She planned to build a great client list and eventually expand the business.
"Ultimately I would like to expand and grow my business and maybe go to a bigger facility, but right now I'm happy here. When the need is there, I'll move."
