ROADBLOCK: This slip on Queen Charlotte Drive was caused by water building up in the soil after heavy recent rainfall.

A slip which closed Queen Charlotte Drive between Picton and Linkwater on Friday has been cleared, although three other Marlborough roads are still closed after landslides and flooding.

Marlborough District Council assets and services manager Mark Wheeler said the slip on Queen Charlotte Drive was due to water building up in the soil after heavy rainfall.

There was always a risk of landslides happening after the soil had been weakened, he said.

Contractors constantly checked the roads, but the slip had come as ‘‘a bit of a surprise’’.

Marlborough Roads assets manager Steve Murrin said the massive slip which closed Port Underwood Rd on Whatamango Hill would take at least another week to clear.

Extensive flooding and debris also led to the closure of Hodder Ford on  Awatere Valley Rd, and the closure of Speeds Rd due to bridge damage.

Both roads would hopefully re-open later this week, Mr Murrin said.
