Marlborough is in fourth place in a USA Today poll of the world's best wine regions, with voting set to close in a few hours.
USA Today, a national daily newspaper in the United States with a circulation of about 1.8 million, listed 20 wine regions online and encouraged its readers to vote for the best wine region in the world.
Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens, who spoke to the Express before Marlborough took out the top spot, said recognition by USA Today as one of the top 20 world's best wine regions was a "reflection of Marlborough's global representation".
"It says a lot of the company we keep doesn't it? . . . not just for Marlborough wine but for New Zealand as a tourism destination, " he said.
"It's really powerful and [the United States is] one of our key export markets. USA Today are one of the most influential websites so it's something you can't beat."
The poll allowed people to vote once a day, so he encouraged people to vote, he said.
Voting for the world's best wine region closes at 7am tomorrow (New Zealand time).
