The province's 150th anniversary went up in smoke on Saturday night during the Lights Over Marlborough fireworks display.
Organised by Whitney St School's parent support group, the annual fundraiser had a special 150th anniversary firework display to delight the more than 3500 people who attended the A & P Park event.
Parent support group member and event organiser Andrea Johnston-Taylor was very pleased with the turnout, particularly because there were a lot of other events on and it was Halloween.
Before the 20-minute firework display just after 9pm, the crowd was entertained by Blenheim four-piece rock covers band Sinner 69 and displays from the Marlborough Gymnastics Association and Star Dance Academy.
Mrs Johnston-Taylor said about 100 volunteers helped run the event, which raised money to build a sunshade over the school's swimming pool and finish furnishing the school's two-year-old hall. This year's crowd, which included many teenagers, was well behaved, she said.
