The Marlborough Cancer Society is seeking a space in Picton where it can base a pilot programme taking cancer support to rural communities.

Society health promoter Corinne Payne said the society already supported people from throughout Marlborough, offering transport for those from out of town as well as babysitting. However, more people would be reached if the service could be taken beyond Blenheim.

What was needed was a suitable room or a vehicle such as a motor-home where the society could base itself every two or three weeks, Mrs Payne said. Cancer support, information and health promotion services would be offered. If the right premises were found, cancer patients in Picton and beyond as well as family and friends could drop by for a talk, she said.

Mrs Payne would like to know whether a Cancer Society presence is wanted in Picton, and if so, what services should be offered.

"I find that a lot of people who have cancer keep it to themselves," says Shirley Timms of Picton, who has been an energetic Cancer Society fundraiser in the town for many years. Every year she runs a pink ribbon brunch at the Spinnaker Restaurant plus an annual fundraiser at the Seabreeze.

She is a firm believer that a listening ear can be helpful, and would love to see support available to cancer patients from Picton and the Marlborough Sounds.

For Picton people keen to help, the society offered volunteer facilitator training for cancer-related workshops, Mrs Payne said. Training was available to people from throughout Marlborough.

If a pilot programme in Picton was successful, the service could be extended to other rural communities, she said. Contact the Marlborough Cancer Society at 5794379 if you have advice, thoughts or helpful suggestions.
