The judge and commissioners presiding over an Environment Court hearing to determine whether TrustPower should be granted consent to build a hydroelectric scheme on the Wairau River, got a bird's-eye view of the river today.

Judge Gordon Whiting and commissioners Alex Sutherland, John Mills and Helen Beaumont began a two-day familiarisation tour of the Wairau River with a flyover.

They were then to visit key sites by car, to give them a better feel for the river environment and how it could be altered by the scheme.

TrustPower and parties appealing a Marlborough District Council-appointed panel's decision to grant resource consent for the scheme, were invited to meet the group at points of interest to them.
