Like bees to a honey pot, thousands of keen gardeners will descend on Marlborough's finest gardens this weekend for the 16th Hunter's Garden Marlborough event.
The six-day gardening extravaganza, which kicked off on Wednesday, attracts visitors to the region every year, some from as far away as the United States and Britain.
With workshops, garden tours, a cocktail party, an art display and a garden fete planned, and with bright sunny conditions forecast for tomorrow – and perhaps a little drizzle on Sunday – it's shaping up to be a great weekend, say organisers.
Executive manager Nicolle Cooze said about 3000 people had signed up for the tours and workshops and 6000 people were expected to attend the garden fete on Sunday from 9am to 4pm in Seymour Square.
About 220 stalls would be set up.
Mrs Cooze said the main differences between Hunter's Garden Marlborough and bigger shows like Christchurch's Ellerslie International Flower Show was that it had a more personal touch, and all the activities were manned by volunteers.
"A lot of people have met some really great friends on the garden tours."
About 70 per cent of the gardens on show open only for this occasion. The event was the result of months of hard work by Mrs Cooze and the nine-person organising committee.
"For Marlborough it's the chance to showcase the beautiful gardens we have here that realistically you wouldn't normally know about," she said.
