Armed police, police dogs and about 10 police cars surrounded a house in Meehan St, Blenheim, last night after a domestic incident took a dramatic turn.
Blenheim police constable Michelle Stagg said police were called to the house after concerns were raised about the well-being of a man inside about 8.30pm.
She said the Tasman armed offenders squad (AOS), who were training at Base Woodbourne, responded after police received reports there were firearms at the house.
A 38-year-old man was detained by police for a mental health assessment.
The man was not charged, Miss Stagg said.
The Tasman armed offenders squad, which includes members from Nelson and Marlborough, is on a three-day training course at Base Woodbourne that finishes tomorrow.
Last night was the fourth time the squad was called out in a week in Nelson and Marlborough.
On Saturday, the AOS searched houses and arrested four men in Richmond after the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Troy Minto in Nelson's Maitai Valley.
Last Thursday, the squad was called to a domestic incident which involved a man allegedly snatching his children at Elaine Bay in the Marlborough Sounds.
The man was arrested and charged with breaching a protection order.
The day before, a 19-year-old man carrying a machete sparked an armed offenders squad callout in Motueka.
An unemployed Motueka man was charged with possessing an offensive weapon.
