Marlborough Boys' College has appointed Rangiora High School deputy principal Wayne Hegarty as its new permanent principal.
Mr Hegarty will start at the beginning of the first term in early February, although he is expected to spend time at the school over the coming month to prepare for next year.
He replaces Dave Turnbull, who started as interim principal in term three following the May resignation of the school's principal of 17 years, John Rodgers.
Mr Hegarty was one of seven applicants for the job . A panel of board of trustees chairman Phil Robinson, ministry-appointed limited statutory manager responsible for employment Murray Hunt and Mr Turnbull shortlisted and interviewed three candidates.
Mr Hunt said it was a comprehensive recruitment process. "He'll be a very good appointment, I think. It will be the start of a new management regime within the school and we're collectively all very pleased."
The new head was experienced in senior management and curriculum.
"It's a positive start for 2010. It's important for the school to make a good appointment and we believe we have."
Mr Turnbull said Mr Hegarty was the "unanimous, clear decision".
"He'll be a fantastic principal. He has huge enthusiasm, vigour and energy and a sharp intellect.
"He spoke a lot about the importance of building solid relationships and how important they are as they are the basis of learning."
He was also community-oriented, which was important in a town like Blenheim where the schools were prominent, said Mr Turnbull.
Mr Turnbull's last day at the college is expected to be December 18, three days after the last day of the term.
Mr Rodgers' resignation came after it was revealed the school was virtually insolvent following a failed attempt to establish an international school in China, a culture of overspending and financial ineptitude.
