Here's a good recipe for success: take 36 kilograms of butter, 12kg of coconut and a whopping 108kg of icing sugar.

Mix that with a good quantity of volunteers and, voila, you have one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for Marlborough Plunket's Blenheim central branch.

The branch's pre-Christmas truffle-making marathon kicks off next week, with 11,400 truffles (950 dozen) the end goal.

Chief truffle maker and branch president Adele Large said the group was hoping to pre-sell as many of the 11,400 truffles as possible.

It was a "massive" project, she said.

From 6am on December 5, about 15 parents and helpers will roll truffle mixture continuously until every sweet is created and packaged.

Mrs Large said the $5 bags of 12 truffles would include a mixture of rum and raisin, orange drizzled with chocolate and apricot drizzled with white chocolate.

Deliveries will start on December 7.

The fundraiser has been going for about five years and will raise an estimated $3000 to renovate the Plunket rooms. Plunket is Government-funded but individual branches must fundraise to cover the day-to-day running costs of the rooms.

About $60,000 is needed to make the two rooms on Henry St more user-friendly and create one main entrance. So far the group has raised about $35,000.

Both Mrs Large's children Thomas, 4, and Abbie, 3, were "Plunket babies".

"It [Plunket] is important because it's accessible to every person in New Zealand – it's the largest provider of welfare to children under five."

Not only do children receive free regular medical checkups and have their development monitored, there is a lot of support for mothers, she said.

Mrs Large thanked New World, G J Gardener Homes, and Marlborough Wholesale Bakers.

Anyone who wishes to order truffles can phone Mrs Large on 5775911.
