A derelict bridge in Onamalutu built in the 1920s that even fire engines and ambulances are uneasy about crossing will be replaced within months.

Silverstream Bridge, on Peakes Rd, is the only way out for the seven residents who live on the dead-end road, and residents say an upgrade is long overdue.

Elaine Barker-Grace and Colin Peterken, who live 300 metres from the bridge, said the single-lane, wooden structure had struggled to cope with extensive flooding.

Mrs Barker-Grace said the bridge was nearly destroyed during floods in November 2006 when logs banked up, causing it to bow.

The bridge was closed until it was pulled into position using wire ropes, but a 250mm bow remained. It has since been restricted to light vehicles.

Farmers had to pay Nelson Forests $100 per trip for the use of a back road when they needed stock trucks to come in, Mrs Barker-Grace said.

When the couple moved to the property nine years ago, restrictions had already been placed on the bridge.

Even fire trucks and ambulances were tentative about crossing the bridge in emergencies, Mr Peterken said.

During Monday's Marlborough District Council Assets and Services Committee meeting, the decision to upgrade the bridge was approved.

Marlborough Roads senior asset manager David Miller said construction of a two-lane concrete bridge capable of holding up to 10 tonnes would begin within two months.

Committee chairman Francis Maher said getting approval at the next council meeting was a "formality only".

Birdlip, Broadway, Heringa, High St West, Tollgate, McLeans and Brancott No2 bridges were also expected to be upgraded within five years.
