Spates Mates beer can costumes have been swapped for dessert dress-ups by Jo Bray and Anna Newman for the 17th Blues, Brews and BBQs festival.
They will be among thousands of people converging on the Marlborough A and P showgrounds tomorrow to sample beer and foods and listen to live music.
Many, like Jo and Anna, will add a bit of extra colour to the event and turn up in costume. There are prizes for those look the best and last year the pair won the Brews and BBQs costume category.
Their beer-can outfits have been traded this year for a sweeter look. Jo's fruit-decorated "pavlova" frock, complete with dacron stuffing and curtain wire backing, took "hours" to make, but her mum, Wendy Mills, gave lots of assistance.
Complementing Jo's dessert option is Anna's outfit – a multi-tiered, "neapolitan gelato" complete with a pink "wafer" wedged against her back.
The pair are sure to turn a few heads tomorrow, but it will be something of a dress rehearsal for Anna, who gets married in a couple of weeks. Before that happens, she is having another practice with a hen party at next weekend's Marlborough Wine Festival. Her bridesmaids are sorting costumes to wear for that.
"I think it's a girl thing," Anna said, when asked what she liked about wearing fancy dress.
