Vandals appear to have bounced on Hertz rental cars parked near the Picton i-Site information centre, causing hundreds of dollars of damage.
Staff found five cars with deep dents in the bonnets at the carpark in Auckland St on Saturday morning.
Constable Tim Goodyer, of Picton, said someone had jumped on the cars, possibly during daylight hours and police were interested in any information from the public about the incident.
Hertz Picton and Blenheim manager Alison Marchant said the damage was gutting.
"I'm pretty angry, pretty disappointed and pretty sad it could happen in our society.
"What's the point? Somebody obviously had a bad day."
Mrs Marchant estimated the dents would cost hundreds of dollars to repair.
Two cars had to be rented out damaged because they had been booked to go.
The incident also generated a lot of extra paperwork and other work for staff during the already busy summer season.
Some cars had been damaged in the carpark before but they were isolated incidents, Mrs Marchant said.
Hertz had about 20 designated car parks near the i-Site and most of those were full when the damage was done.
Police had been helpful and hoped the person or people responsible for the damaged cars would be caught, she said.
Anyone with information on the incident should call Mr Goodyer on 520 3120.
