Police are appealing for public help after the discovery of potentially deadly nylon strung across two roads in Marlborough.

Constable Michelle Stagg of Blenheim said nylon was found strung across Blick's Rd in Renwick early on January 27 and on Northbank Rd last Friday.

The Marlborough Express' Andrea Scott reported the nylon on the Northbank after witnessing a motorist's lucky escape.

Scott was on her way to Mill Flat for a spot of camping when she rounded a corner and saw a car "swerve" on the road.

"I saw a flickering in front of me so I slammed on the brakes only to see that some ill-minded person had tied fishing line from one side to the other, about a metre in height."

She said nylon had snapped the aerial off the car in front, which had lost control.

"I was just lucky I stopped in time, because it was done across in multiple lines so thick that it would not have snapped when driving through."

Miss Stagg said police were treating the incidents seriously, adding that cyclists and motorcyclists in particular were at risk if they rode into the nylon.

"In the worst-case scenario, it could kill someone."

Those responsible could face charges of endangering transport or endangering life or safety, which both carried a maximum penalty of 14 years' imprisonment, she said.
