Northbank Rd will get a $320,000 upgrade after a national reallocation of funding by the New Zealand Transport Agency.

Work on the road, which is off State Highway 6 near Kaituna, had been put off at last month's Marlborough District Council's assets and services meeting, because the Silverstream Bridge in Onamalutu required urgent repairs.

An extra $55 million has been provided nationally for road works.

The Northbank upgrade will include road widening and pavement strengthening in three parts of the road, totalling 2.96 kilometres.

Chairman Francis Maher said the announcement was "the best news in a long time", as the road repairs had been on the council's to-do list for a long time.

Marlborough Roads manager Frank Porter said it was expected the work would be approved by the end of the month and then tenders would be let.
