Fishing on the plate

Marlborough cats were no doubt licking their lips over the weekend after more than 200 children dropped fishing lines in Waikawa Bay for the inaugural Carters Kids Gone Fishin' event on Saturday.
Co-organiser Steve Smith said 192 children were registered for the event, but he estimated more than 200, as well as their adult companions, took part.
The keen young fishers reeled in a couple of hundred spotties, as well as other fish, Mr Smith said.
"Spotties are good cat food ... no doubt there were some well-fed cats in Marlborough over the weekend."
He and others involved, including Gone Fishin' television show host Graeme Sinclair, were rapt with the turnout and the event would be repeated next year.
"The idea behind the event is to get mums and dads, with their kids, doing something in the outdoors together," Mr Smith said.
