Planning is under way to celebrate the 150th jubilee of Picton School in 2011.

The school was opened on April 6 1861 with a student roll of 15.

The first school was erected on the corner of Devon St and Broadway.

Parents were asked to pay a levy of 10 shillings.

Many paid in kind; some with eggs, others potatoes, milk or a load of firewood. In 1882 the school was moved to its present site.

It was destroyed by fire in 1928. The cause of the fire was never known.

For anyone keen to help organise the jubilee, there is a meeting in the school staffroom tomorrow at 7pm to establish a jubilee committee.
