The generosity of an animal-loving Blenheim couple means animals at the Marlborough SPCA now have their own specialised care unit.

SPCA staff, supporters and Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman gathered yesterday for the official opening of the Ingram Animal Care Unit.

The $30,000 unit was built with support from a "significant" bequest from the estate of Jim and Kay Ingram, SPCA committee chairwoman Jill Hollingum said.

Ms Hollingum also thanked more than a dozen Marlborough individuals and businesses who supported the project.

All of the assistance had allowed them to "get on and do it, rather than having to fundraise first".

The care unit means sick and injured animals can be cared for, and recover, in a proper clinical examination room that was clean and warm rather than the unsuitable and cramped existing care unit.

Longtime family friend John Orchard said Mr and Mrs Ingram, who died in 2008 and 2006 respectively, would have been delighted to see the result of their bequest. "They were mad on cats, but both loved all animals."

The couple, who had no children, were guide dog sponsors who also donated and volunteered for the SPCA over many years, Mr Orchard said.

The Salvation Army and Hospice Marlborough had also received significant bequests from the couple.
