A Blenheim man who allegedly carried 3.6 kilograms of cannabis, potentially worth more than $107,000 on the street, across Cook Strait in his car was arrested after he drove off the ferry, Arahura, in Picton yesterday.
Detective Kris Payne of Blenheim said the car was stopped in Kent St at 9.20pm.
He said some of the cannabis had been divided into "ounce bags" of 28g.
The approximate total street value of the seized cannabis was between $71,528 and $107,293, Mr Payne said. Two firearms and thousands of dollars in cash were also found in the car and seized by police.
Mr Payne said five police officers searched the car when it was stopped in Picton, and other officers searched the man's house in Blenheim.
A 54-year-old Blenheim man was charged with possessing cannabis for supply. Mr Payne said the man had a firearms licence, so it was unlikely that charges would be laid in relation to the guns.
The man was held in custody overnight to appear in the Blenheim District Court today.
