The Russians are coming!

Marlborough will host the Russian rugby team in September 2011 for the Rugby World Cup, after the team lost to Georgia 36-8 in the last round of the European Nations Cup on Saturday.

Mayor Alistair Sowman wants to get a Lada painted in Russian colours for the visit, which he described as a "huge opportunity".

"This is a chance to showcase Marlborough to a new audience, so it's important that we give the Russian squad a great experience while they're here," Mr Sowman said.

"The Russian market is vast and increasingly wealthy and we should not forget that Russia is the third largest wine market in Europe.

"The challenge is to work with the Russian media to sell the benefits of Marlborough."

Russian expatriate Lena Milne has lived in New Zealand for five years and was "excited" her new home was hosting her countrymen.

"It's a similar place, so they will feel at home."

The team will be staying in Blenheim from September 6 to 12, and September 16 to 18, but will not be playing any games here.

Rugby World Cup project manager Susan Witehira said part of the World Cup strategy was to spread the hosting of teams into "heartland New Zealand", to give small towns the chance to experience the event as well.

The visitors will use Lansdowne Park and the swimming pool and gym at Stadium 2000, while they are in town.

Mr Sowman said he expected interest among local rugby fans keen to watch a World Cup team practise.

"I hope the players will be able to visit some schools and local rugby clubs." Russia have played rugby in Marlborough before. In 1991, they took on Marlborough at Lansdowne Park, winning 23-16.

A Steering Committee has been established involving key stakeholders from Business Groups, Moteliers, Tourism, Iwi, Council, Wine and Rugby. This group will ensure all opportunites in Marlborough are maximised to their full potential.

Leading this group is Susan Witehira who is the World Cup Project Manager for Marlborough and she is based at Destination Marlborough.

There are many plans in the pipe lines and Im sure this amazing opportunity to showcase Marlborough to Russia and the World will focus the Steering Committee to encourage people to Love Rugby & Love Marlborough!

This is great news for the Marlborough region.

Hopefully the council, rubgy board etc can put aside their egos and work together to maximise this opportunity and welcome the Russian team and their supporters.

Who will be co-ordinating and have overall responsibility for the effort?
