The son of a Blenheim woman killed in a car crash on Friday night was unable to drive home straight away as he discovered his car had been stolen soon after he heard about his mother, Nelson police said.

The Isuzu was reported stolen at 2am on Saturday, said Senior Constable Phil Wylie, of Nelson. Mr Wylie said the man had planned to pick up relatives before driving to Blenheim. His mother was killed after a driver sped off from a police checkpoint and crashed into her door.
