A new trust will decide how to spend money raised by a new Queen Charlotte Track user fee.
The $12 fee was implemented on July 1 after a long battle by 10 landowners on the track, who sought compensation for the commercial use of their land.
The newly formed Queen Charlotte Track Sustainability Trust includes representatives from the Department of Conservation, the Marlborough District Council, Destination Marlborough, the Queen Charlotte Track Land Co-operative, which represents track landowners, and Queen Charlotte Track Inc, which represents commercial users of the track.
A charitable trust, it has the support of the New Zealand Tourism Industry Association.
It will look after the sustainable management of the track and can apply for other funding for improvements and projects.
DOC Sounds Area manager Roy Grose said DOC was pleased to be a partner in the new plan.
Queen Charlotte Track Inc spokeswoman Juliet Gibbons said the trust would bring all stakeholders together to develop a shared vision for the future of the track.
Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston said the initiative would provide a platform for all parties to contribute to enhancing the track experience for visitors.
"It tells tourists we are serious about tourism here in Marlborough and we will work together to deliver quality visitor experiences."
