The Blue Door secondhand shop is delighted with an influx of winter furnishings to help people in need around Marlborough.

Manager Sandra Kirk said there had been a huge response to an article in The Marlborough Express two weeks ago that called for unwanted bedding, carpet and curtains.

The store, which donates its profits to charity, received at least one request a day during winter for warm items.

Many people moved into rental properties and realised about this time of year they, or their homes, were not well-equipped for winter, Mrs Kirk said.

About 30 curtains were dropped off after the story ran, as well as a large amount of duvets and blankets.

"People I'd never met before were coming in. It's been absolutely fantastic; there are such generous people in Blenheim."

Demand was so high virtually all the new stock had flown out the door, she said.

Mrs Kirk said the store was always on the lookout for winter items, so encouraged people to drop off clean, unwanted goods during store hours.

The Blue Door on Charles St is open from Monday to Friday 9am to 3.30pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm for drop-offs.
