New Zealand Winegrowers' research committee has launched a new doctoral scholarship for study of a wine-related topic.

The Dr Rod Bonfiglioli Memorial Scholarship offers $40,000 a year for up to three years.

Winegrowers chairman Stuart Smith, who announced the scholarship on Friday during the Romeo Bragato wine conference in Blenheim, said Dr Bonfiglioli was "one of those people who make a mark on your road through life".

Applications for the scholarship close on February 1. Applicants should have a clear vision of how the New Zealand wine industry could be improved, Mr Smith said.
