More than $7 million will be spent upgrading areas of state highway at Okaramio and in the Awatere.

Marlborough Roads manager Frank Porter said four sharp curves on State Highway 6 near Okaramio would be straightened out by Easter 2011.

The Leslies and Camerons Rd intersection, just south of Okaramio will also be upgraded with seal widening and more lighting. Power lines will be put underground to reduce hazards close to the road.

Sneider's Bridge, 10km west of Renwick on State Highway 6, will also be upgraded in the project.

Meanwhile, work on the Lions Back stretch of road south of Seddon is under way.

The work will involve realigning a 1.9km section of State Highway 1, removing five sharp corners and widening a sealed shoulder over the Lions Back hill to allow slower vehicles to pull over, Mr Porter said. Several power lines and a Telecom fibre-optic cable would also need to be moved as part of the project.

Fulton Hogan Marlborough will complete both projects.
