The country's new top young viticulturist, Stuart Dudley, says he is relieved and ecstatic to take the title in his home town.
The national finals were held in Blenheim on Saturday, coinciding with the Romeo Bragato wine industry conference.
The awards held as part of the conference also produced three champion titles for wines produced from Marlborough grapes – sauvignon blanc, pinot gris and riesling.
Mr Dudley, the Delegat's Wine Estate grower-division viticulturist, nabbed the crown following a gruelling day of competition involving theory and practical skills, a general knowledge quiz and speeches, as well as the light-hearted Horty Sports race.
Mr Dudley said he was feeling the pressure after finishing third last year. "It's a relief to get it done, especially in my home town. It's what I really wanted to achieve so it's good to get there."
He was particularly pleased to win after several family members, including his parents and brother, came to Blenheim for the final.
"They were really chuffed ... I think Mum was more excited than I was."
He was grateful for their support, as well as that of friends in the industry and his employer.
Asked if he expected a pay rise, Mr Dudley said he would have to see what his boss said today.
"I'll be sure to bring it up," he said with a laugh.
Mr Dudley has worked for Delegat's for three years, starting as a technical supervisor at the Oyster Bay vineyard after he graduated from Lincoln University with a post-graduate degree in viticulture and winemaking.
He planned to eventually work overseas, hopefully in South America and the United States, he said.
Despite his success, 28-year-old Mr Dudley said he would not defend his title next year although he still wanted to be involved. It was time to give younger competitors a chance.
