Last committee meetings
Two Marlborough District Council committee meetings this week will be the last committee meetings before the October 9 local body elections. Community and financial planning and environment committee meetings are on Monday and Thursday respectively.
The last council meeting before the election will be September 16.
The first council meeting for the new term will be on October 21 and committee meetings will begin again on November 15.
Launch invitation
Sir Stephen Tindall and Margaret, Lady Tindall, will be guests of honour at a function hosted by the Mistletoe Bay Trust in Blenheim on Friday. Trust chairman Simon Heath said the Tindalls, who are the trust patrons, would help launch the trust's new education initiatives to support local schools and families. The trust is responsible for the Eco Village development at Mistletoe Bay. School principals, teachers, boards of trustees and business people are invited to the function at the Marlborough Convention Centre. RSVP to Trev Easton on 5736102.
Re-use Shop popular
The Marlborough District Council's Re-use Shop has recorded strong revenue in its first few months of use. Council operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney said revenue had increased from $5600 in May (an incomplete month) to nearly $15,000 in July.
Average daily takings over the month had risen from $400 to $481. The volume of material being donated was ahead of expectations, Mr Rooney said. Revenue goes directly back into council environmental services.
Meet the candidates
A Meet the Wairau/Awatere Candidates public meeting will be held in the Ward Town Hall on September 14. Flaxbourne Settlers Association Inc chairman Tony West said all five candidates for the ward had indicated they would attend the question-and-answer session. The resignation of Wairau/Awatere councillor Andrew Barker prompted the meeting, he said. Mr West would chair the meeting and he encouraged residents to attend.
Correction
Wairau Hospital medical radiation technologists, or radiographers, are on strike, not the radiologists as reported in our paper on Friday. The error is regretted.
