A new Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority programme to help households pay for solar water heating kicked in yesterday.

Marlborough District Council support services manager Dean Heiford yesterday said if EECA solar water heating grants were continued, the council could extend its Clean Heat and Warm Homes loans scheme to solar. At the time he was not aware that the new EECA programme had been launched, offering $500 and $1000 grants depending on systems' performance rating and whether industry standards were met.

Mr Heiford said the council was doing the sums on extending its loan scheme to solar water heating.

Nelson company SolarCity yesterday launched a pilot solar water heating programme in Marlborough, installing solar hot water systems in homes and businesses then monitoring performance.
