Mussel-industry veteran Terry Schwass has applied for resource consent to build a free-range egg farm for up to 8000 hens.
Mr Schwass applied for resource consent to the Marlborough District Council two weeks ago to build the farm on Freeths Rd, in Koromiko, between Picton and Tuamarina. He declined to be interviewed.
The resource consent application says Mr Schwass has hired an organic egg producer from the North Island as a technical consultant to help with the farm, which he hopes will be low impact and environmentally friendly.
Backing the application with a letter of support is Picton food distributor Robin Beattie, who said he was constantly being asked by customers if he could supply free-range eggs.
Mr Schwass plans to have 8000 hens, which at 75 per cent production would lay 3500 eggs a week.
The hens would live in a purpose-built concrete bunker and would have a fenced free-range area for them to run.
