Slip couple getting low on water

A couple on Mt Riley Rd near Canvastown is slowly running out of household water, after a log slid down the hillside and skewered their water tank in the December 28 storm.

Jean and John Watson said a Nelson Forests representative looked at the damage last Friday and told them they were looking into many similar complaints.

It would be a week or two before a decision was made, they said.

For now, house water was being taken from a second settling tank which could not be refilled. Stock troughs were being directly filled with silty creek water rather than via the tank.

Preliminary work had been done towards installing a new tank, Mr Watson said.

A slip from the forestry block behind also covered three of the Watsons' paddocks with shingle, rocks and trees.
