Twelve support and service roles at the Conservation Department's Nelson Marlborough conservancy office will be axed following a nationwide review aimed at cutting the department's costs and increasing efficiency.
The review began in July last year and aimed to restructure the department to better direct resources towards field work.
DOC spokesman Rory Newsam said 96 jobs would be removed by July 1, mainly at DOC's national office in Wellington and its 11 conservancy offices throughoutNew Zealand.
Staff at DOC's five area offices in Nelson and Marlborough were unaffected as area offices weren't a part of the support service review, Mr Newsam said.
DOC was setting up new regional service centres in its Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch offices to reorganise systems to support conservation staff in the field.
Though many of the positions would be disestablished as a result of the review, many would be relocated, meaning staff had the option to move to a service centre, or regain employment at an area office.
It was unclear how many staff at the Nelson Marlborough conservancy office would have to relocate,Mr Newsam said.
