A farmer used water from a nearby water tank to try to douse a tractor fire on a farm near Kaikoura yesterday.
Kaikoura Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Ian Walker said the tractor driver was working with the vehicle on the Postmans's Rd farm when he saw smoke and flames about 3pm. He tried to extinguish the flames with water from a water tank but the fire took off, Mr Walker said.
"It was unfortunately just one of those things."
The tractor was completely gutted and would have to be written off. "She was well involved when we got there."
It was hard to say what had caused the fire, Mr Walker said. It was too late in the year for a bird's nest, although it could have been a rat's nest or similar which had ignited.
