Statistics New Zealand will advertise next week for area managers to organise next year's census, 2013 Census regional manager Linda Till said yesterday.

The census will be held on March 5, 2013, delayed from the same date last year because of the Christchurch earthquakes.

A team from Statistics NZ, including Ms Till, briefed Marlborough District councillors and staff on census preparations, saying that for about four weeks there would be about 1700 people employed to ensure the coverage needed.

Legally, every adult resident in New Zealand on March 5, 2013 is supposed to fill in a census form.

The information collected is used by the Government to report on many policies and to help with planning. The material is also used by councils and many other groups.

Ms Till said advertisements for area managers would be run on Friday next week.

"We're looking for valuable local knowledge."

Statistics NZ user needs consultant Mike Berry said the Marlborough District Council was being included in the census preparation because the department needed all the help it could get to ensure the best coverage of communities.

"We're hoping to get a good return rate," he said.
