A 24-year-old man appeared in Blenheim District Court court on Monday after he shoplifted alcohol from a liquor store in Picton.
Waipatu Winitana, a mussel opener, admitted shoplifting and was sentenced to 60 hours community work and ordered to pay reparations of $185 to Super Liquor Picton.
The court heard Winitana distracted staff while a hitchhiker he had picked up put a bottle of whisky under his shirt and left the store.
Staff at the liquor store said the whisky stolen was a bottle of 18-year-old Glenfiddich, less than five of which are sold a year. Police tracked Winitana after staff called police and reported his number plate. The hitchhiker remains at large.
