Queen Charlotte College duo Dani and Jack are ready to begin their quest for rock'n roll glory this weekend.
Singer and guitarist Dani Gibbs, 15, and guitarist Jack Driffill, 14, will bring their unique style of acoustic rock to the Marlborough Convention Centre in Blenheim for the Smokefreerockquest Marlborough regional finals on Saturday.
The pair will compete against eight other finalists, after a performer pulled out of the top 10. The top two from Marlborough will then send a 15-minute performance video to the national organisers in the hope of being selected as one of the eight bands to play off at the national finals in Hamilton in September.
"We've been practising lots. Our music is kind of contemporary soft rock, like Pink's acoustic stuff," Dani said.
"The meaning behind the words is important. I'm not really into modern stereotypical music – it can sound a bit meaningless. I'm a singer before a guitarist so it's all about the lyrics.
"I'm not going to sing something that's worthless."
Dani played her first Smokefreerockquest when she was 12 years old and this will be the third time she has competed.
She has been playing the guitar for about four years and singing for "as long as I can remember".
"I love performing. The Rockquest stage is awesome, they have a massive sound."
She said she did not feel nervous in the build-up to the competition, as most of the competitors were friends, but admitted there might be a few jitters on the night.
"I'm excited about it, I know most of the people playing, and I won't be nervous until maybe just before going on."
Neither Dani's nor Jack's parents play music themselves, but both felt their parents encouraged them to keep improving by playing music at the college.
The pair first played together during school productions and were in the same band last year, but decided to go out on their own for the Smokefreerockquest.
"I just do what she says," Jack said with a smile.
He said it was too soon to say where music would take him and just hoped the pair would do well on the night.
The Smokefreerockquest Marlborough final will be on at the Marlborough Convention Centre at 7pm on Saturday, June 23. Tickets cost $15 from Destination Marlborough.
