Two 20-year-old Brazilian men were found to be overstayers when they were arrested for consuming cannabis at 9.20pm on Tuesday.
Constable Michelle Stagg, of Blenheim, said one of the men told police he was a vineyard worker, while the other said he was unemployed.
They were served with deportation documents and taken to Christchurch and would be escorted back to Brazil, she said.
A Labour Department spokesman said the two men were liable for deportation after routine immigration checks showed they were unlawfully in New Zealand.
