Right Lotto numbers come up after 15 years
A Blenheim couple are half a million dollars richer after winning Lotto's first division with the same numbers they have been playing for 15 years.
The couple, who wish to "fly under the radar", were lying in bed listening to the radio on Saturday night when they realised they had won $500,000, said Lotto spokeswoman Karen Jones. The winning numbers for the $1 million first division prize money was held by only one other ticketholder.
They had been playing the same numbers for 15 years so immediately recognised their numbers had come up, the husband said.
"My wife jumped out of bed and went onto the computer to check the results – and sure enough, we had won half a million," he said.
"We just went yee-ha, and then spent a sleepless night thinking about our win and talking about what we could do with the money."
The winning ticket, which was sold at Redwood Lotto in Blenheim, was kept in sight on the chest of drawers all night.
The couple plan to pay off their mortgage and help out family and some charities, they said.
"It's a great win, enough to make us comfortable."
A $6.5 million prize won at the weekend on a Lotto Powerball ticket sold at The Fix St James, in central Auckland, still remains unclaimed.
The winning numbers were 2, 9, 10, 14, 22 and 24; Powerball was 9; and the bonus was 40.
